assent
- assent
n.
agreement to undergo medical treatment obtained from an adult or child who is legally incompetent to consent. The practice of involving such individuals in decisions regarding their health care wherever possible is becoming increasingly common and is beginning to form part of certain professional codes of practice and legislation. In research, it is particularly difficult to justify proceeding without assent, since research is not principally and inevitably in patients' best interests.
